Bump on the road

Sporting Club Jacksonville 1–0 Brave SC

Our unbeaten run ends after nine matches, and it ends in a way nobody saw coming.

Their goalkeeper, Felipe Matos, took a drop kick in the 24th minute and hit it the length of the field. Mohammed Poyer ran onto it and chipped Youssef Moumban from distance.

Goalkeeper's assist, keeper-to-striker, coast to coast. Their own commentary could not quite believe it either:

"A fantastic clearance that just could not have been drawn up any more beautifully."

It was Poyer's second of the season and Jacksonville's only goal of the night. They spent the next hour defending it, and they defended it well.

We had the ball for most of what followed. Matsuura put in a left-footed cross that led to a corner on 56. Chances came and went. Matos, who had just completed a transfer from South Carolina Aiken to Lincoln University of Missouri, shut down everything that reached him.

With the match nearly gone, Moumban came up for a set piece himself — the goalkeeper in the opposition box in the last seconds, looking for something. He was tackled in the act and the whistle went.

1–0.

Five wins, four draws, one defeat. Still top of the Southeast Division with two matches to play, and the division still ours to win.

Sporting Jacksonville finish their season 2–4–6, and this was their only multi-point weekend of the campaign — a reminder that they have been a hard team to beat all year even while struggling to score.

Also on the night: Caue Ramos was named to the USL League Two Team of the Month for June. He was fouled heavily in the second half and got up each time.

Two matches left.
