Only in The Villages

The Villages SC 4–1 University of Guelph

We played our first home game today, and it looked like nowhere else in soccer.

The University of Guelph came down from Ontario on their spring training tour and we met them at the Polo Club's practice field. There are no stands out there. So people came in their golf carts, parked them in a ring round the pitch, and watched from the seats.

That is not something you see anywhere else in this league, or in any other. It is entirely The Villages, and it was one of the best things about the afternoon.

We won it 4–1.

Guelph are one of the stronger university programmes in Canada and they came here to be tested in the sunshine before their season. Our players — most of whom had known each other for about three weeks — gave them a proper afternoon of it.

To everyone who drove out: thank you. That was a good first home game.

Next stop, the league.
