We met Bob Kane, captain of the Grand Master Dragon Boat Team, at Running the Squares. He invited our players to come out one morning and join his crew, and they went.
They learned what the sport actually is. They paddled out with the team. And they were shown how these boats are looked after — which, given the size of them, is a job in itself.
We are not sure the squad understood what they were signing up for. Twenty people pulling in time, for a sustained period, is a different kind of hard from running, and several of our players found that out somewhere around the halfway mark.
No need for the gym that day.
Our thanks to Bob and the Grand Masters for having us out.
