A hundred and twenty minutes in Newport News

Tormenta FC 2 4–2 The Villages SC (a.e.t.)

Southern Conference Semifinal.** Two down inside ten minutes, level by thirty-four, and then a hundred and eighty minutes of football across two nights caught up with everybody.

First half: four goals

5' — Alexis Ledoux put Tormenta ahead, off a cleared long throw from Leroy Enzugusi.

10' — Jordan Jowers doubled it, a low shot between the keeper's legs, assisted by Owen Green.

Two down inside ten minutes.

21' — Nazar Deputat, assisted by Leonardo Paiva. 2–1.

34' — Leonardo Paiva, assisted by Chris Dilan. 2–2.

Level at the break, having been two behind after ten.

And then nothing, for seventy-five minutes

The entire second half passed without a goal. So did the first period of extra time.

This was our second match in two nights. On Saturday we had beaten East Atlanta with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. On Sunday we played another ninety, and then another thirty.

112' — H. Barry broke it for Tormenta, assisted by B. Gottlieb.

120+3' — G. Rodriguez added a fourth in the dying seconds.

4–2.

Man of the Match: Austin Lukasik. Sharp on his approach to the ball, fast and relentless — in our final match of 2021.

The season

Southeast Division Champions. One defeat in the regular season. Nineteen league matches unbeaten stretching back to 2019 before Tampa Bay ended it, and a 3–0 against the same club to finish.

A goal against River Plate — the only one anybody managed against them on their Florida tour. A 2–1 against Orlando City B. A conference quarterfinal won in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

And a hundred and twenty minutes in Virginia on the second night of a weekend, two goals down after ten, level at ninety.

Not the ending we wanted. A very good year all the same.
